You need good advice at every stage of your development, that’s obvious. But picking the right advisors is not so straightforward, when you are starting out you will be best with sole practitioners who you can get to know and who get to know you well enough to actually care about your business and your progress.
You also need advisors who take your call when you ring them up and have the time to deal with your enquiries. The other factor to consider is the fee level of your advisors, if you go to the biggest firm in the town you will pay the highest fees and probably end up with a junior dealing with your business.
It is a balancing act between having the skills you need but not being too small a fish in their client pool. You must feel very comfortable with your advisors, if you currently have a solicitor or an accountant that makes you feel like you are bothering them each time you call them on the phone or they are always distracted when you have a meeting – change them now!
Remember that solicitors, accountants, brokers, and other professionals are actually running their own business, they have rent to pay, staff wages, clients putting them under pressure and only so many hours in the day which is what they sell to make money!
You will get the best out of them if you respect their time, be well prepared for meetings or calls, if you say you just need ten minutes try your best to stick to that time, whatever you do please avoid chit-chatting with them during their office hours, if you want to have a general chat invite them out for a drink or a meal where they can relax – you will probably learn a great deal this way - without paying fees.
